Out of CCU!
When I was moved up to the 6th floor, this meant I had to start moving more and had to start therapy. I was still connected to a telemetry monitor because my heart rate was going high still. I was put on a heart medication to control it, but it would still occasionally go up, so they wanted to keep me monitored. I had physical therapy several times a day, and was using a walker to walk. The first day, I was able to walk from the bed to the chair and the bed to the bathroom. I was super unsteady, even with the walker and would loose my balance and tip backwards. I was still given nebulizer treatments several times a day, but no longer on supplemental oxygen! YAY!!! Things were getting better one small step at a time! Although, still they didn't know why all this had happened to me. The unknown is the worst. So, I would continue to not sleep, afraid that my throat would close. They tried giving me a sleeping pill, this didn't help. Even after being extremely exhausted from all the therapy, I still couldn't sleep. I couldn't lay flat because I would cough, I wasn't comfortable sitting up because my butt hurt, but I was alive and at that point that was all that mattered.
I spent 3 days on the 6th floor. Working every day to get stronger. I was determined to go home. I worked super hard with physical therapy, even though I would go home with the walker. I advanced to the point of walking out in the hallway. They even took me to the stairs and practiced going up two stairs and back down. On the 2nd to the last day I finally advanced to a regular diet. It was still a little hard for me to swallow but I just realized I had to take smaller bites and take my time. Each day I still had lab tests and xrays. But, I was down to 2 IV sites! The early morning of the day I got to go home, me being the good patient that I am, realizes how busy the staff is and turned on my call light to go to the bathroom. Well, as I waited I thought I'm going to impress them and get my slipper socks on by myself and be all ready when the get in here. Well, I was ready alright, waiting on the floor with the bed alarm going off. Yup, I slid right off the bed onto the floor.
Fortunately, I was still able to go home that day, and going outside in the nice sunshine was the best feeling ever. My mom, dad and Dominic drove me back to Cumberland, we got my medicine and I went home, sat in the recliner (with Dom on duty to watch me) and I fell asleep waiting for Bud to get home from work. Best feeling EVER! But, the start of a VERY long road to recovery, with ups and downs, but again I'M ALIVE!
